Arizona Fall League

Here are the box scores for the two losses for the Scorpions over the weekend.

Friday

  • Elmer Reyes – 1-4, 2 errors, picked off
  • Robby Hefflinger – 0-4, 2 Ks

Saturday

  • Tommy La Stella – 1-4
  • Kyle Kubitza – 0-2, R, RBI, 2 BB
  • Elmer Reyes – 1-3, 2B
  • Aaron Northcraft – 3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
  • Juan Jaime – 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 K
  • John Cornely – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K

I’ll start with Tommy La Stella, because that is really who you came here to read about, isn’t it?  La Stella only played in 1 of the 2 games this weekend, and went a pedestrian 1-4, but he still has not struck out yet in his 44 AFL plate appearances.  Elmer Reyes played in both of the games this weekend, going 2-7 with a double.  Unfortunately, he made 2 errors in Friday’s game and was also picked off for good measure. Robby Hefflinger has been struggling lately, and it didn’t get any better on Friday for him when he put up an 0-4 line and stuck out twice. Kyle Kubitza didn’t get a hit, but had a decent game on Saturday. He went 0-2, but walked twice and recorded a RBI when he walked with the bases loaded.

Aaron Northcraft got the start for Scottsdale on Saturday and didn’t really fare too well.  He gave up a couple of runs via a RBI double and a solo homer.  He did strikeout 3 batters in his 3 innings.  Juan Jaime also had a rough outing Saturday. He got himself into trouble by leading off his inning by hitting a batter and giving up a single.  Both of those guys came around to score on a double.  Cornely finished out the game Saturday, and pitched another perfect inning while striking out 2.  This was the third straight scoreless outing for Cornely.  In those 3 outings, he has pitched 3.1 innings and has not allowed a base runner while striking out 6.

Scorpions will be back in action today (Monday) at 12:35 MST.  Check back tomorrow for our daily updates.

Dominican Winter League

Friday

  • Christian Bethancourt – 1-3, K, 0/1 stolen bases against
  • Yohan Flande – 0.1 IP, 1 H
  • Edward Salcedo – 2-3, 2B, RBI, BB, SB, fielding error
  • Jose Lugo – 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K

Saturday

  • Omar Luna – 0-4, 3 Ks
  • Juan Cedeno – 0.1, 2 H, 1 K
  • Wirfin Obispo – 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, WIN

Sunday

  • Christian Bethancourt – 0-4, R, BB, K, 0/1 stolen bases against
  • Jose Lugo – 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 K

Nothing really earth shattering from any of the weekend lines down in the DWL.  Bethancourt played twice and recorded a hit and a walk.  Of note, two runners tried to steal on Christian and he threw them both out.  That is a very good sign. Edward Salcedo only played in one of the weekend games, but he made it worth his while.  He was 2-3 with a double, walk, RBI and stole a base.  He also made a fielding error.  Jose Lugo had two scoreless one inning outings this weekend. He has pitched well down there, only allowing 1 ER in his 4.1 innings worked while recording 7 Ks.  Wirfin Obispo earned the victory for his team on Saturday pitching 1.1 perfect innings in relief.
