It’s time. After some minor tune-ups for both teams (just 1, in fact, for UGA), the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Georgia Bulldogs will square off on the basketball court on Friday night. Neither team has struggled to grab their early-season wins, but at the same time, neither has seen the level of athletes on the other bench that they will encounter in Stegeman Coliseum in this game.

Georgia is set to defend their home turf with defense, as the majority of a “lockdown” unit returns from last season (with the glaring exception of lottery pick Kentavious Caldwell-Pope), and they should be able to hold Tech down a bit on that end of the floor. However, the Jackets do present some match-up issues with new point guard Trae Golden and Marcus Georges-Hunt, and the Tech offense will be looking to flatly out-score the Dawgs.

On the other end of the court, UGA is expected to struggle a bit this year, and this will be a big test. They did manage 72 points against Wofford, but needed 29 free throw attempts to do so (thanks to 43.8% shooting), and there isn’t a single go-to option on the Bulldog offense. Tech’s defense will be still be challenged in a new way, though, as both of their first two opponents were held under 60 points, and the Jackets’ defensive efficiency has been good for 23rd in the nation at 93.9 points per 100 possessions.

The experts is Las Vegas have made this a 1-point line in favor of Georgia Tech, and that tells a bit of the story. The Jackets are considered to be (at least in the preseason) the better team and that is illustrated by being a road favorite. For me, this is a classic “stay away” game with regard to actually making a pick, as we have little data on both teams in a rivalry spot. At any rate, this is going to be a whole lot of fun.

Stay tuned for more information as it breaks, and an upcoming recap when the game is completed.
