It seems like an eternity since the Yellow Jackets left the court in Athens after toppling their in-state rivals, but it’s time for a return performance from the basketball program. Tech is set to host Dayton on Wednesday night at McCamish Pavilion in what should be a highly entertaining match-up.

The Jackets have been winning with defense in their first 3 games, and I would expect that to continue in a big way here. Tech is allowing just 93.4 points per 100 possessions on the defensive end, and that is good for 17th in the country among the 351 Division 1 programs. In short, they have been very, very good on defense, and while Dayton has a couple of premium scoring options, that shouldn’t scare anyone.

Offensively, Tech hasn’t been quite as effective, but portions of the roster have been lighting it up a bit. Trae Golden leads the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game, and if he can improve on his 3-point percentage (22.2% right now), that will inevitably help things. Marcus Georges-Hunt has also been tremendous in the early going (13.3 points, 7.0 rebounds per game) and Golden should have a lot of help here against Dayton.

As usual, we turn to Las Vegas, and see that the “experts” have made Tech a 7.5-point favorite in this game. That is a good deal of respect for Dayton, who is playing a true road game, but I also don’t disagree that the 3-0 Flyers present a legitimate opponent. Brian Gregory and company have the better team here, but it’s also quite possible that Dayton is the best team they’ve faced (Georgia included) this season.

Stay tuned for more information, and an upcoming recap when the game is completed.
