It’s been a bit of a rough patch for the Georgia Tech hoops program, as they are coming off back-to-back losses to Ole Miss and St. John’s in the Barclays Center Classic last week. However, they have a big-time, National TV opportunity to right the ship on Tuesday night, as they host Illinois in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge.

The visiting Illini are 7-0 on the year, but they do not have a win over a ranked opponent, and the only “real” win on their schedule was a road victory at UNLV. However, Illinois is still a very good team according to any metric, as KenPom has them 46th overall in the country (and a dominant #8 overall in defensive efficiency) and the AP has them 39th in the voting this week.

They are led by Rayvonte Rice (a 6-4 junior guard) and Tracy Abrams (6-foot-2 junior point guard), but neither of them is having a fantastic shooting season thus far. It would be beneficial for Brian Gregory if his staunch defense thus far (55th nationally) could get some stops in order to give his struggling offense the best chance to succeed in a tough match-up.

As usual, we turn to Las Vegas for some clarity, but this time, we don’t get much. The “experts” have made this a “pick” between the two teams, meaning that it is an absolute coin flip. In short, Illinois is the slightly better team on paper, but with a presumably angry/focused Tech team playing in its home building, we should be in for a tight one. This is one of two remaining spots for a quality non-conference win (the other coming at Vanderbilt in January) for the Jackets, and it’s time to go grab one.

Stay tuned for more information as it arrives, and we will bring you a recap after the final buzzer sounds.
