The biggest headlines today are either the ludicrous asking price the Cubs have/had for Jeff Samardzija or the Hawks trade rumors in my opinion. Just look at that picture of Omer Asik though… no wonder the Rockets want to trade him.

Braves

Braves Trade Notes: Cubs Wanted Jason Heyward or Justin Upton for Jeff Samardzija–Scott Coleman, Talking Chop

"Turns out Chicago wanted a King’s ransom and then wanted to sleep with the pretty princess the night before the wedding. From Bowman, emphasis my own:"

Yeah, that’s pretty ridiculous. Here’s Mark Bowman’s story that brought these facts to light:

Braves complete search for rotation depth with Floyd–Mark Bowman, Braves.com

"ATLANTA — As Braves general manager Frank Wren prepared to exit last week’s Winter Meetings, he acknowledged he was aware of the impatience being expressed by those fans who have been anxiously waiting for him to make a notable offseason acquisition. It seems safe to say impatience was replaced with displeasure Monday afternoon, when Wren revealed that by signing Gavin Floyd to a one-year contract, he likely ended his pursuit of a veteran presence for Atlanta’s starting rotation."

I’m not displeased…

Falcons

Falcons vs. 49ers : Which San Francisco Player Would You Take?–Dave Choate, The Falcoholic

"The Falcons would probably kill to be where the 49ers are, fighting for playoff position. Since that’s not possible, let’s indulge in a slightly less depressing hypothetical. If you could steal a 49er, who would you take? I’m giving you a list of players who might entice you."

Falcons exercising patience during full-blown youth movement–D. Orlando Ledbetter, AJC ($)

"FLOWERY BRANCH —After rookie cornerback Robert Alford’s ill-advised lateral while returning a recovered fumble against Buffalo, Falcons coach Mike Smith almost blew a gasket."

Hawks

NBA Trade Rumors: Are the Atlanta Hawks in on Omer Asik?–Kris Willis, Peachtree Hoops

"The Atlanta Hawks are among the teams that are rumored to be in on Houston Rockets center Omer Asik. The question is whether or not there is anything to the rumors? Atlanta keeps popping up in various reports but it seems to be in some cases a situation where team execs or the media is playing matchmaker."

Bulldogs

Safety Shaquille Fluker leaves UGA, seeks transfer–Chip Towers, AJC

"Athens —Junior Shaquille Fluker has left Georgia and plans to transfer to another school to continue his football career. The circumstances under which he lefet remain somewhat unclear.Fluker, a safety from Meridian, Miss., transferred to UGA from East Mississippi Community Collegein the summer with the hopes of playing this season. But he never got that chance."

Yellow Jackets

Evaluating the 2009 signing class–Ken Sugiura, AJC

"To me, it’s a mixed bag, to use a favorite phrase of Johnson’s, an assessment that Sims agreed with when I asked him about it Monday. What will irk this group for a long time, I am sure, is that Tech was a few plays from being 2-2 with Georgia, similarly close to being at least 2-2 or even 4-0 against Virginia Tech, and 1-3 and possibly 2-2 with Miami. And that, of course, would make things look entirely different. On the other hand, the Jackets could also be 2-2 against North Carolina, maybe even 1-3. If USC quarterback Matt Barkley had been available for the Trojans in the 2012 Sun Bowl, that game might have turned out differently."
