The Georgia Tech baseball team has been rolling lately. Last weekend they hosted the No.25 Miami Hurricanes and won the series 2-1 before picking up midweek wins against Kennesaw State and and Georgia State. This weekend the Yellow Jackets travel to Chapel Hill where they will take on the No. 17 North Carolina Tar Heels.

The Tar Heels are arguably the best team that the Jackets have faced this season and will be a great gauge to see how good this Tech offense really is. If Georgia Tech is able to get handfuls of runs against one of the better pitching staffs in the ACC, then there’s a lot of hope for this lineup as they move throughout the regular season.

Georgia Tech is currently a top-three team in the league in batting average (.294) and slugging percentage (.418) as well as leading the conference in hits, doubles, triples and total bases.

But, like I mentioned above, the Tar Heels are a pretty stout pitching team. They are second in the league in ERA (2.43), second in the league in runs allowed (56) and have also allowed a league-low in doubles, triples and homeruns.

This should still be a good matchup though, because you could argue that UNC hasn’t really faced a stout offensive team and Georgia Tech hasn’t faced a top-notch pitching team.

Here are the projected pitching matchups for the weekend:

  • Friday (5:00 p.m.) – RHP Josh Heddinger (GT) vs. RHP Trent Thornton (UNC)
  • Saturday (6:00 p.m.) – LHP Devin Stanton (GT) vs. RHP Benton Moss (UNC)
  • Sunday (1 p.m.) – RHP Matthew Grimes (GT) vs. RHP Zac Gallen (UNC)
