Kennesaw State shocks Alabama to open NCAA Regionals

The Kennesaw State Owls baseball team opened regional play in the 2014 NCAA Baseball tournament by facing the second seeded Alabama Crimson Tide, and walked away from Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee victorious, as the Owl pitching staff held Bama to just five hits, and will move on in the winners bracket, winning 1-0.

The lone run of the game scored when catcher Brennan Morgan lead off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved over to third on a wild pitch before finally being brought home on a sacrifice fly from Kal Simmons, and that’d be all the Owls would need to pull off the upset.

While his offense didn’t do much for him, KSU starter Travis Bergen didn’t seem to mind, and he nearly went the distance, throwing 121 pitches over 8.2 innings, allowing just five hits and striking out three. Justin McCalvin came in to record the final out.

Kennesaw State will now await the winner of the top seeded and host Florida State and fourth seeded Georgia Southern. The loser will face Bama. And, let’s be real, how sweet would an all-Georgia matchup be?
