680 the Fan to begin as flagship radio station of Georgia Tech athletics

In the wake of long time Atlanta sports radio giant 790 the Zone closing its doors to local programming less than two weeks ago, the South’s largest city now boasts just two full-time sports radio stations once again. On Monday, one of those stations made a major announcement, as 680 the Fan has agreed to terms in order to become the flagship radio station of Georgia Tech athletics.

680 the Fan announced the move during their “Chuck and Chernoff” show on Monday afternoon, but this is bigger news for the Georgia Tech athletic program itself. The Yellow Jackets used 106.7 FM as their flagship previously, but Tech was long tied to the 790 the Zone brand, including a relatively weak signal compared to their cross-state counterpart in the Georgia Bulldogs.

Specifics of the deal have not been released to this point, but this agreement would seemingly ensure that fans of the Yellow Jackets will be able to hear football and basketball broadcasts beginning in the fall, with a sprinkling of other programming if previous formats are followed here. This is a big-time break for both Georgia Tech and 680 the Fan, and the two parties should mutually benefit.
