Mark Fox and the Georgia Bulldogs basketball program just finished a productive season despite some defined roster limitations, but on Tuesday, it was reported that Fox will lose a front-court player with a season of eligibility remaining. Rick Lewis of Phenom Hoops reports that big man John Cannon is set to transfer to UNC-Asheville after spending three seasons in Athens.

On paper, this isn’t a significant loss for the Bulldogs, as Cannon has never averaged as many as nine minutes per game throughout his three seasons. However, there is no such thing as too much depth with regard to big men, and Coach Fox certainly can’t be thrilled with losing a player who has contributed, albeit mildly, in his career.

John Cannon arrived with little fanfare as a two-star recruit in the class of 2011, and frankly, his pedigree suggested that he was more of a mid-major recruit than someone who should be seeing time in the SEC. Cannon will be forced to sit out a season as a result of NCAA transfer rules, and he will be eligible to join the UNC-Asheville team for the 2015-2016 basketball season.
