Atlanta high school shortstop Michael Chavis taken 26th overall by Boston Red Sox

Sprayberry High School shortstop Michael Chavis, who was a highly coveted position prospect on the Braves draft board, was taken 26th overall by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

Chavis is noted by many scouts to be somewhat undersized, but his bat and speed makeup for whatever he lacks vertically. He is known to have both above-average bat speed and power, and won the home run derby at the Perfect Game All-American Classic. He was drafted officially as a shortstop, but is projected to move to the hot corner or even a corner outfield spot, as he has the speed that a corner outfielder should have.

Currently, Michael Chavis is signed to play with Clemson, who is losing both an outfielder and 2nd/3rd baseman, and with the Red Sox pretty solid at the outfield position, several blogs and people who know the game and team say the Sox can take their time with some draft picks. If Chavis decides to turn pro, the Red Sox low-A team is up in Greenville, which would be a fun weekend trip to see an Atlanta native play ball.

Michael Chavis was the second player from Georgia to be selected, following Max Pentecost going 11th to the Toronto Blue Jays, and we wish the best of luck to both players.
