Tray Matthews announces transfer from Georgia to Auburn

Less than two weeks ago, Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs chose to dismiss starting safety Tray Matthews from the program, and Matthews was quick to share that he would be headed to either Louisville (to join forces with Todd Grantham and Josh Harvey-Clemons) or Auburn. On Saturday, Matthews formally announced that he would be headed west to play under Gus Malzahn and company at Auburn.

Matthews was dismissed on account of off-field issues, but when he was on the field for the Dawgs, he was a stellar asset in the secondary. As a former four and five-star recruit in 2013, this is a huge loss for Richt and new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, and Matthews was expected to be one of the best players in the secondary following his stellar freshman season.

As a result of NCAA regulations, Tray Matthews will be forced to sit out this season, but when he arrives in full force with the Auburn Tigers, he will have three years of eligibility remaining. Now, it’s time to officially turn the page on Georgia’s secondary, and it will be intriguing to see what direction that Jeremy Pruitt chooses to pursue.
