Dominique Davis waived by Atlanta Falcons

Less than 24 hours after shipping linebacker Akeem Dent to the Houston Texans in exchange for quarterback T.J. Yates, the Atlanta Falcons have cleared the decks at the quarterback position by electing to waive Dominique Davis.

In all honesty, this move should not come as a surprise, as the writing was on the wall for some sort of change on the depth chart after the acquisition of Yates. The 24-year-old Davis has attempted only seven passes in his career with the Falcons, but after inking a deal out of East Carolina, he emerged as the primary backup to Matt Ryan, thanks to a lack of depth at the position.

Yates has a significant amount of experience after being thrust in action in Houston as a result of injuries to Matt Schaub, and on paper, the upgrade from Davis to Yates could be a marked one. Still, it is never fun to see a player waived simply because of an acquisition to the team, and according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN, Davis was alerted to the move following practice by being told that it “was a business”.

Matt Ryan holds the keys to the empire for the Falcons, but if something were to happen, it will be T.J. Yates taking the reins instead of Dominique Davis.
