Update: The Falcons have decided to sign Angerer to a contract.

With training camp on the horizon, the Atlanta Falcons are virtually set with their roster at this point. However, some rumblings surfaced on Tuesday that indicates Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith could have some interest in fortifying their linebacking corps, as the team has reportedly brought in former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Pat Angerer for a workout.

The 232-pound Angerer appeared in eleven games (nine starts) for the Colts during the 2013 season, and he posted 63 tackles to go along with two pass deflections and one interception. However, the former Iowa Hawkeye was a firm starter for Indianapolis during his first two seasons, 2010 and 2011, and at the age of 27, it is exceedingly reasonable to think that he still has some quality work left in the tank.

Because the Falcons lost Sean Weatherspoon for the season and didn’t fully replace him, the interest in Angerer makes some sense, but at this time, there is nothing firm to report about the future here. With that said, injury issues appear to be what forced Pat Angerer out of Indianapolis, and if he is fully healthy at this stage, he could represent an upgrade as a middle linebacker. Stay tuned.
