Jeff Francoeur to return to Major Leagues with San Diego Padres

Remember Jeff Francoeur?

If your memory is failing, the now 30-year-old Francoeur burst onto the scene with the Atlanta Braves in 2005 with some incredible numbers at the plate (after being selected in the first round by Atlanta in 2002), and he followed that up with a couple of respectable seasons. Unfortunately, his career has gone south in a significant way since leaving Atlanta in 2009, and he has been languishing in the Minor Leagues this season.

Now? It appears as if he’s returning to the show.

First, there was a precursor from Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

Then, there was confirmation from the great Peter Gammons.

And finally, there is this.

After hitting effectively in the minors this season (.294/.325/.465 with 15 home runs) in addition to his all-world throwing arm, it appears as if the Braves may see Francoeur this weekend, and that is poetic justice. As a fellow alum of Parkview High School in Lilburn, I will always root for Jeff Francoeur, and it is really nice to see him in the big leagues.

However, prepare yourselves for an endless supply of jokes and memes this week.

He’s back.
