Georgia Bulldogs ranked 12th in preseason USA Today poll

We are less than a month away from real, live college football, and with the calendar having shifted to August (as of this morning), it is time for the level of buzz to rise on a daily basis. In that vein, USA Today has released the Amway Coaches Poll of the top 25 teams in college football, and the Georgia Bulldogs have been pegged as the 12th-ranked team in the country.

More from Georgia Bulldogs

The defending national champion Florida State Seminoles sit atop the preseason poll after garnering 56 out of a possible 62 first-place votes, and Mark Richt’s club falls behind three SEC rivals in Alabama (second), Auburn (fifth) and South Carolina (ninth). It is no surprise to see Georgia with lofty expectations, as they have been one of the darling “sleepers” for many pundits, but with a brand new quarterback for the first time in four years and some recent defections on the defensive side of the ball, there are still some real question marks on the roster.

The Bulldogs are the highest ranked team that did not finish with 10 or more victories last season, and only Ole Miss joins Georgia among teams in the top-20 who won eight games or fewer during the 2013 campaign. The polls will be greatly reduced in importance this season with the start of the new, four-team playoff system, but the coaches poll has always been an interesting barometer for national perception, and the Dawgs find themselves squarely in the mix on the eve of the season.
