Atlanta Braves at Seattle Mariners Preview: Julio Teheran vs. Chris Young

facebooktwitterreddit

Well, the losing streak is now at seven games for the Atlanta Braves, after dropping their first game to Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners last night. In the second of this two-game set, the Braves will rely on Julio Teheran to get them out of their funk, with Chris Young getting the ball for Seattle.

The Pitching Match-up:

Teheran has been one of the Braves top pitchers this season and is looking at a 2.69 ERA to go along with an 8.07 K/9 and 1.94 BB/9. He’s been lights out lately and is coming off of an eight inning masterpiece against the Dodgers where he allowed just two runs and struck out nine batters. Maybe this time, he can get some run support and pick up the win.

For the Mariners, Young is 9-6 on the season with a 3.19 ERA. This is why you should always look into more advanced statistics, because if you didn’t you might think that he’s been super good this year. Once we look at the peripherals, it seems more like he’s been super lucky. On the season, Young is striking out just 5.48 batters per nine, walking 2.98 per nine and has a 4.89 FIP to go along with a 5.23 xFIP.

The Predictions:

Well, yesterday I screwed up by picking against King Felix, but I have no regrets. If anything, this makes the competition between myself and Brad a bit more interesting.

Here’s a look at our current records:

  • Carlos: 5-3
  • Brad: 4-4

Today though, he’s not going to catch up with me because we’re both feeling good about Julio in Safeco Field. With the Braves top young pitcher going, and a non-elite arm for the Mariners, this is as good a time as any to get one of those deceptive wins.
