Football is here! Football is here! The Atlanta Falcons aren’t the first time in the NFL to begin their preseason slate, but on Friday night, the lights will be on at the Georgia Dome as the Miami Dolphins invade for the first of four games in August.

As with any preseason tilt, the focus will be on players in position battles and on those vying for the final spots on the 53-man roster, but for Atlanta, there is also some intrigue to see a glimpse of Matt Ryan, Steven Jackson and company offensively. Unfortunately, there is some real doubt as to whether we’ll see Julio Jones on the field as he continues his recovery, but Roddy White in full pads will certainly warm the hearts of many Falcons fans.

Defensively, Marquis Spruill was ruled out for the season as a result of a torn ACL on Thursday, and that puts the spotlight on what is now a battle at the end of the linebacking corps. Other than that, Mike Nolan’s group is reasonably set, but the cornerback position could provide fireworks, especially with regard to Javier Arenas and draft pick Ricardo Allen.

For the degenerates among us (and I’m sure you’re out there), Las Vegas has installed the Falcons as 3-point favorites in the game. Do what you will with that in this setting.

It is important to realize that this is preseason and that we will not a see a great deal of the starting units, but alas, there is real, live NFL football happening in Atlanta on Friday. Hit us up in the comments below and stay tuned for post-game analysis, including a full recap shortly after the game.
