92.9 The Game becomes radio partner of Atlanta Falcons

With the unfortunate decay of Atlanta sports radio station 790 the Zone, the Atlanta Falcons have been left twisting in the wind with regard to a local partner. The former AM giant is still under contract to broadcast games for the Falcons this season, but with highly dwindling ratings and nothing in the way of local content to promote the club, Rich McKay and company were thought to be looking elsewhere. On Thursday, that theory was confirmed, as the team and 92.9 the Game have announced a partnership that will begin this weekend.

As of now, this agreement is being billed as an addition of 92.9 the Game as the “new FM home” of the Atlanta Falcons, but it is easy to see a scenario in which 790 the Zone simply fades into the night following this season. The biggest complaint with 790 the Zone has always been a lack of strong broadcast signal that would limit their exposure, and with 92.9 the Game, that simply isn’t an issue.

It will be interesting to see how 92.9 the Game packages their new agreement with the Falcons, but as the rights holder for both the Falcons and Atlanta Hawks at this point, the “new kid on the block” is making a big impression.
