When we last heard from the Atlanta Braves with regard to the new stadium project in Cobb County, the agreement with the county was unanimously approved in order to set the stage for initial development. Now, the team has released a statement announcing the groundbreaking on the facility will take place on September 16 at 11:00 am in order to facilitate a 2017 opening of the ballpark.

Courtesy of Fox Sports South, here is a quote from Braves chairman and CEO Terry McGuirk:

"“This new ballpark will be a world-class venue that will give Braves Country the ultimate fan experience, both inside the park and out. We look forward to continuing to build great memories for our fans at this wonderful new location.”"

Though nothing about the release in earth shattering, it is encouraging to see development set to begin on the project, especially with all of the hoopla and coverage surrounding the move to the suburbs. At this point, the stadium is expected to seat 41,500 fans with a three-deck design, and that should alleviate some of the concern about attendance percentages associated with what is one of the largest ballparks in the Major Leagues.

Stay tuned for the latest coverage on the Braves and the stadium development as we inch toward completion.
