Georgia Bulldogs soar into top 10 of college football polls

On the heels of a dominant victory over the Clemson Tigers in the 2014 season opener, the world of college football is quite impressed with the Georgia Bulldogs. First, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit anointing Mark Richt’s club as the top team in college football after one week, and following that revelation, both of the “major” polls have placed the Dawgs among the top ten teams in America.

It was a point of comedy in the preseason that UGA was ranked 12th in virtually every poll imaginable, but after perhaps the most impressive win of the opening weekend, that was quickly a figment of the past. The Amway Coaches Poll (formerly the USA Today Coaches poll) ranks the Bulldogs eighth this week, behind only Alabama and Auburn in the SEC and with a first-place vote, and the Associated Press pegs Georgia for sixth in the country with two first-place selections.

Obviously, polling is always interesting to follow, simply because of the various biases that exist with the voters. Some may vote on what they’ve seen most recently, while others more heavily weigh their preseason sentiments into the mix. With that said, the Georgia Bulldogs looked to be a loaded team on both sides of the ball in dismantling a top-20 opponent, and they can go a long way toward backing that up when they visit South Carolina after an open date this weekend.

Stay tuned.
