Offense silent again as Atlanta Braves fall to Miami Marlins, 4-0

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the Atlanta Braves offense went silent yet again on Sunday afternoon. As such, the Braves fell in the series finale to the Miami Marlins by a score of 4-0, and with that loss, Atlanta dropped the series to Miami.

Julio Teheran, who started the game for the Braves, actually looked to be dominant in the early going. Miami’s Christian Yelich led off the game with a harmless single, but after that base hit, Teheran retired 13 straight Marlins while flashing an impressive array of offerings. Unfortunately, that success was short-lived, and it quickly turned to disaster.

Following that string of outs, Garrett Jones broke the silence for the Marlins with a double in the fifth, and he was quickly brought to the plate on an RBI single from Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the game’s first run. Teheran navigated the remainder of the frame unscathed, but Miami kept coming in the bottom of the sixth, as Julio allowed seven hits in nine batters while the Marlins amassed a 4-0 lead.

As you can see from the final margin, that was all the home team needed, and the Atlanta offense had all kinds of issues. The prime example of the futility came in the sixth inning, when Jason Heyward led off the frame with a single that was followed by a double by Phil Gosselin. With runners at second and third and with no one out, the trio of Freddie Freeman, Justin Upton and Evan Gattis faded quietly into the night, and in a flash, the biggest offensive threat of the game evaporated.

On the whole, the Braves offense managed just five hits and one walk in the game, and frankly, it was an all too familiar circumstance for the club. With the loss, Atlanta drops the season series to the Marlins (yikes), and pending a result from the Milwaukee Brewers, Fredi Gonzalez‘s club could once again be on the outside looking in toward the playoffs.

Stay tuned.
