During the Atlanta Hawks media day today, the team announced that they had extended the contract of Dominique Wilkins and named him “special advisor to CEO” Steve Koonin:

Before this promotion, Wilkins was the Vice President of Basketball for the team, and will continue to serve in that role as well as special advisor. In addition to the added title and responsibilities, the team announced that they would be putting up a statue of Wilkins at Philips Arena:

Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed had high praise for Wilkins during a press conference earlier in the month before the move was officially announced by the team. This comes from Chris Vilvamore’s story with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"“There is no player more deserving of such an honor than Dominique for his continued commitment to the Hawks and the City of Atlanta,” Koonin said in a statement. “Beyond his amazing play on the court during his Hall-of-Fame career, he has been an ambassador for this franchise and the city for three decades. For all he has accomplished and continues to do for the Hawks franchise and the City of Atlanta, we are proud to bestow this permanent recognition of his legacy.”"
