Georgia Tech needs help from Duke in pursuit of ACC Coastal title

With their dominant victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday evening, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are firmly in the discussion with regard to the ACC Coastal Division title. Paul Johnson and company are sitting with a 3-2 record in conference play, and that mark places them in sole possession of second-place in the division. However, the Jackets need some help.

Georgia Tech needs Duke to lose twice.

The Blue Devils hold the lead in the ACC Coastal with a 2-1 conference record and a 6-1 mark overall, and unfortunately for fans of Georgia Tech, they hold the tiebreaker over the Jackets on the strength of their 31-25 victory in Atlanta on October 11. Duke does have somewhat of a challenging schedule ahead, with a trip to Pittsburgh and home games against both Virginia Tech and North Carolina (among others), but to be honest, the slate isn’t terribly difficult with both Clemson and Florida State off the schedule for the Blue Devils in 2014.

Is it possible that Duke could lose two more times? Most certainly, but at the same time, Georgia Tech would also have to run the table in ACC play, and that would include a home win over Clemson on November 15 in addition to next week’s road tilt against NC State.

In short, the Yellow Jackets are alive and kicking in the hunt to reach the ACC Championship Game (and a likely battle against Florida State), but it is time to watch the scoreboard whenever the Duke Blue Devils are in action over the next month.
