Atlanta Hawks top Miami Heat with slim roster

Mike Budenholzer rested four of his regular players Saturday night against the Miami Heat, but the shortened roster was still able to pick up a 93-91 victory, thanks in large part to Paul Millsap and Dennis Schroder.

Millsap scored a team-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting while Schroder continued his breakout 2014-15 season with a double-double that featured 16 points and 10 assists. The German point guard made five of his 14 shot attempts on the night and found his way to the free throw line six times–sinking five of his free shots.

Kent Bazemore and John Jenkins both stepped up in the moment as well, scoring 15 and 12 points respectively.

It’s nice to again see the amount of depth that this Atlanta Hawks team has, and even though the Heat aren’t a great team by any means, they are a playoff team at the moment and getting the win with so many key players out is big.

Jeff Teague, DeMarre Carroll, Pero Antic and Al Horford were all given the night off–Horford didn’t make the trip as his wife just recently gave birth–and the Hawks didn’t flinch.

The defense was apparent in the final box score, as the reserve group managed to hold Dwyane Wade‘s team to just 39.5 percent from the floor and 26.9 percent from beyond the arc. The Hawks were beaten pretty handily on the glass (47-37) as they have been for the most part this season, but good shooting, good defense and good assist-turnover numbers can make that a minor concern.

Next up for Atlanta is James Harden and the Houston Rockets, back in Philips Arena Tuesday night.
