Atlanta Hawks Collect 50th Win In Blowout Style

The Sacramento Kings came into Phillips Arena looking to get back on the winning ways but they came to the wrong place.  The Atlanta Hawks came out hot from long range and buried the Kings, 130-105.

The Hawks came out in the first quarter on fire, shooting 7 of 12 from behind the arc.  Most of those long range bombs came from Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll, who combined for 22 of Atlanta’s 33 points going 6 for 9 from three.

On the other end of the floor DeMarcus Cousins was struggling.  The big man, who averages over 23 points a game, was held scoreless in the first quarter.

Rudy Gay was the lone bright spot for the Kings in the first quarter who had 10 points and 2 boards and played all 12 minutes.

The 2nd quarter was something special from the Atlanta Hawks. To put it another way, the Hawks gave up 34 points to Sacramento and increased their lead by 9.

Atlanta managed to put up 43 points while shooting 68% from the field and 71%(!!!) from the arc. All those made baskets allowed the Hawks to have 25 assists in the first half. That’s essentially a games worth of assists in 24 minutes.

DeMarre Carroll lead all scorers with 20 points followed by Rudy Gay with 14 and Kyle Korver with 12.  The 76 point half was the most in any half this year by the Hawks and Atlanta took a 22 point lead into the locker room.

The 3rd quarter must have felt relatively disappointing to the Hawks as they only managed 29 points.  Much of the 3rd frame was controlled by Jeff Teague.  His 7 point and 4 assists allowed the Hawks to extend their 22 point lead to 23 heading into the 4th.

Atlanta did a much better job of protecting the basketball vs. Kings as compared to their last game against Philadelphia.

The Atlanta Hawks only had 7 turnovers in the first three quarters which is part of the reason they cracked the 100 point barrier with three minutes left in the third quarter.

The final act was a little sloppy from Atlanta who allowed Sacramento to climb back to within 18 but that was as close as they would get.  It’s hard to blame Atlanta for a messy fourth quarter as they were on cruise control after the first 12 minutes but good teams need finish strong.

Credit to the Atlanta Hawks as they played the final 5 minutes with a little more urgency and extended the lead to 28 before allowing a late 3 to make it a 25 pt game.

  • Atlanta had 4 players with 18+ points lead by DeMarre Carroll who ended with 20 points and 5 boards.  Other standouts include Jeff Teague who had 18 point and 12 dimes.

Sacramento  was led by DeMarcus Cousins who had 12 points and 14 boards and Rudy Gay who finished with 23 and 4.

The Hawks hit a couple of milestones for season as their 42 assists is an NBA best for any team.  The 130 points is the team high this season eclipsing the 127 they dropped on Cleveland in December.

That win was the 50th on the season for the Hawks who still have 19 games left to play. 60 wins should happen and the Hawks will have a chance to make it 51 wins on Wednesday as they Travel to Phoenix for a 9:00 tip.
