3 UGA Defensive Backs to Star for Pruitt in 2015

UGA begins its second season with DC/Secondary Coach Jeremy Pruitt on its staff.  Last fall in Year One with the Dawgs, Pruitt took a young and inexperienced defensive backfield that gave up a 100 yard touchdown in the Gator Bowl versus Nebraska in 2013 to a secondary that I don’t think allowed a 40 yard completion all year in 2014.

Though CB and Secondary leader Damian Swann graduated and is now with the New Orleans Saints, UGA should continue to improve in the defensive passing game in 2015.  Here are three UGA DB’s that I think can become major leaders and star for Pruitt this fall.

FS Quincy Mauger

I’ve been a fan of Mauger’s since he starred for the Kell Longhorns back in high school.  He’s got great vision and ballhawking skills at free safety with 4 interceptions and 4 passes defended last season.  Mauger can tackle well for a DB with at least 51 total tackles in the Georgia secondary in both seasons as an underclassmen.

He might not become the new vocal leader of the UGA defensive backfield, but his consistency on the gridiron and high football intelligence bodes well for Quincy Mauger to have a very productive junior season with the Dawgs.  I think Mauger could get six picks and six passes defended in 2015.  He could garner some attention in the All-SEC conversation should he progress for Pruitt this fall.

SS Dominick Sanders

I’m convinced that Sanders is a special football player.  He was the first player that Pruitt recruited to Georgia after a one-year stint in Tallahassee with the Florida State Seminoles.  The sophomore from Tucker established himself as a playmaker for Pruitt with 3 interceptions for 64 yards and 5 passes defended.  Sanders even had a fumble recovery that went for a touchdown last year as true freshman.

I believe that Dominick Sanders is a star in the making. He will become the vocal leader and face of the Dawgs promising young secondary.  Though Georgia lists him as a strong safety, I don’t think positional labels really apply to Sanders’ game.  Yes, you could say that he’s a good fit for the Star position, but he’ll make plays for Georgia regardless of where he lines up in the secondary.  The sky is the limit for Sanders and it will be a blast to watch him play these next few years in Athens.

CB Tramel Terry

I think Terry is a wildcard this year for the Dawgs.  The former Mr. South Carolina Football has finally been assigned a position.  Now that he is comfortably in the UGA Secondary, I think his athleticism makes Tramel Terry the breakout star in the defensive backfield for the Dawgs this fall.  Pruitt will probably use him as a man-cover corner to account for his blazing speed.  At this point, Terry will improve as a DB with the more reps he gets.

There is so much promise on the horizon for Pruitt’s secondary.  Other good DB’s include Aaron Davis, Shattle Fenteng, Malkom Parrish, and newcomers from Mississippi Johnathan Abram and Jarvis Wilson.  It’s amazing how much Pruitt improved this once-porous UGA secondary into something the team can rely on.  No longer do I feel that the Dawgs’ weakest link is their defensive backfield.  I’m looking forward to big things coming from Quincy Mauger, Dominick Sanders, and Tramel Terry, among others, in 2015.
