Atlanta Braves Defeat Brewers 4-3, Banuelos Earns 1st Win

Atlanta Braves rookie pitcher Manny Banuelos pitched 5.1 innings of 1-run ball in his second career start as the Braves defeated the Brewers 4-3 on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Banuelos once again pitched well in his second career game, allowing only 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1, earning his first career win. Fatigue has been an issue for Banuelos, as this is the second consecutive game in which the pitcher has seemed to fade before earning a quality start.

The Atlanta Braves found themselves down 1-0 early following a 1st inning homer by Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy. A.J. Pierzynski countered in the 2nd inning, hitting a solo home-run himself. A.J. Pierzynski remained hot at the plate, going 3 for 4 tonight and raising his average to .289.

Cameron Maybin and Nick Markakis also had RBI’s on Tuesday, with Maybin tripling home Eury Perez in the 5th inning and Nick Markakis singling home Jace Peterson in the 7th inning to give the bullpen more run support. With Maybin continuing to exceed expectations this season, the Atlanta Braves may try to sell high on his career year and move him before the July 31st trade deadline.

The Atlanta Braves used 6 different pitchers on this night, including the recently recalled Mike Foltynewicz. Foltynewicz once again had an electric fastball, but became anxious after giving up a walk and lost his command of the strike zone. He gave up 1 earned run off of two hits and a walk.

Tonight also saw the début of another pitcher, David Carpenter (no relation to the former Atlanta Braves reliever). Carpenter had excellent numbers thus far this season at AAA Gwinnett, possessing a .073 ERA in 27 games with a .183 average against and 36 strike-outs in 37 innings pitched. He entered the game in the 7th inning to relieve Foltynewicz, and struck out the only batter he faced.  That slider to Ryan Braun was nasty!

With the Atlanta Braves wanting more stability in their shaky bullpen, Carpenter’s addition is another fine middle relief option to bridge the gap between the starters, Jim Johnson and Jason Grilli. David Aardsma allowed a solo home run to Adam Lind in the 8th inning which made the score 4-3.

Jason Grilli earned his 24th save of the season by striking out the side in the bottom of the 9th inning, lowering his ERA to 2.67.  He is beginning to have more clean innings for the Atlanta Braves in recent save situations.  Grilli could be a replacement on the NL All-Star roster with his impressive first half work.

The Atlanta Braves go for the sweep over the Milwaukee Brewers tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 2:10 PM.
