The Atlanta Braves defeated the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Monday night by outhitting the Brew Crew 15 to 8 at Miller Park.  AJ Pierzynski and Kelly Johnson both had outstanding games at the plate tonight for the Braves.

Pierzynski led the way for Atlanta going 4-5 with two doubles off RHP Kyle Lohse.  Kelly Johnson went 2-4 with 3 RBI’s including a mammoth shot to deep right-center off Lohse in the top of the first inning.  Cameron Maybin, Nick Markakis, and Juan Uribe also had two hits apiece tonight for the Braves.  Both Maybin and Markakis are nearly hitting .300 on the year with identical .297 averages.

Atlanta’s starter rookie RHP Matt Wisler didn’t have his best stuff tonight but still found a way to get hitters out.  He went 5.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 6.  I would have liked to have seen him finish the sixth inning but a walk to 3B Aramis Ramirez forced Manager Fredi Gonzalez to remove Wisler from the game a little early.  Matt is now 3-1 in 4 starts for the Atlanta Braves since being called up from AAA Gwinnett on June 19th.

The Atlanta Braves bullpen pitched 3.1 scoreless innings tonight.  David Aardsma came in and put out the fire in the bottom of the sixth after Wisler’s early exit by getting SS Jean Segura to fly out to Cameron Maybin in centerfield.  Luis Avilan threw a strong 7th inning, allowing one hit and earning his 10th hold on the year.  Jim Johnson continues to rack up the holds for the Atlanta Braves by pitching a hitless 8th inning to earn his 20th hold.  Then Jason Grilli came in and pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning to earn his 23rd save on the season.

  • I know our bullpen isn’t great as Nick Masset and Dana Eveland both cost the Braves a series sweep over Philadelphia yesterday (both have since been DFA’d), but I don’t think our bullpen is the worst in baseball anymore.  It feels like the relief corps has found some confidence ever since Aardsma joined the big league ball club.  That might be purely coincidental but all four relievers that appeared in tonight’s game have sub-3.00 ERA’s on the year.  It’s nice to see Atlanta’s weakest link improve as the season progresses.

To go into Miller Park and outhit the hottest hitting team in baseball should bring a lot of confidence to an Atlanta Braves lineup that is missing its best offensive player in 1B Freddie Freeman.  I feel that Kelly Johnson’s two-run homer off Kyle Lohse set the tone for the Braves offense tonight.  Had Milwaukee scored the first run of the ball game, it might have gone the Brewers way tonight.  But Lohse was getting way too much of the plate and Atlanta certainly capitalized on his fastballs up in the zone.

Great win for the Atlanta Braves tonight.  Atlanta has won six of its last eight ball games and looks to continue its winning ways when rookie LHP Manny Banuelos takes the mound for the Braves tomorrow night.
