Atlanta Braves Drop Finale to Brewers 6-5

The Atlanta Braves were looking sharp Wednesday afternoon as the team was on the verge of sweeping the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.  Julio Teheran pitched his best road start of the year, going 7 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits (both homers) while striking out 8 hitters.

Cameron Maybin crushed a 3-run homer to left off Milwaukee’s starter Mike Fiers in the top of the 3rd inning.  Kelly Johnson joined the home run party with a solo shot to right-center two batters later.  Atlanta had a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th inning.

  • LHP Luis Avilan came in and gave up two bloop singles and then a mammoth three-run longball to give the Brewers a 6-5 lead and they never looked back.  To Avilan’s defense, those two bloop singles to Shane Peterson and Gerardo Parra were just tough breaks.  But you can’t make a mistake to a player of Carlos Gomez‘s caliber.  The Brewers CF went yard twice this afternoon with 4 RBI’s to salvage a game in this series for Milwaukee.

I really wanted this win for Julio Teheran’s sake who for some reason struggles on the road for the 2015 Atlanta Braves.  He hunkered down after a shaky first inning to throw six more solid innings for the Braves today.  The ball was certainly carrying this afternoon as Atlanta and Milwaukee combined for 5 home runs.  Both starters Teheran and Fiers gave up a pair of longballs this afternoon.  But it was Gomez’s momentum changing three-run bomb in the bottom of the 8th off Avilan that made all the difference today.

I didn’t particular care for the way that Gomez showed up Avilan after hitting the go-ahead homer.  He tends to showboat when he makes a big play for the Brewers and though I applaud his enthusiasm for the game of baseball, it’s always the same thing coming from Carlos Gomez.  Had he stepped back into the batter’s box against the Braves this afternoon,  I’m certain Fredi Gonzalez would have called for a bean ball.  It’s frustrating because Gomez is such a talented player but he keeps doing this infantile stuff that doesn’t belong in the game of baseball.

That being said, I’m glad that the Atlanta Braves took two of three on the road against arguably the hottest hitting team in baseball.  Atlanta sits just one game below .500 at 42-43.  Should the Braves play with confidence in Denver, Fredi Gonzalez’s ball club could be a winning team before the All-Star Break.  Atlanta has won three straight series over the Nationals, Phillies, and Brewers.  Let’s hope the trend continues as Atlanta plays the Colorado Rockies this weekend.
