Atlanta Braves Travel to Camden Yards to Face Orioles

After going 3-3 in their last six games against NL Pennant contenders in the Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals, the Atlanta Braves (46-52) have to feel pretty good about their odds to take some games in a rare road series with the AL’s Baltimore Orioles (48-49).

Atlanta has its best player 1B Freddie Freeman back from nearly a month-long stint on the DL due to a wrist injury.  And you have to believe that RF Nick Markakis will want to have a big series against his former team of nine years when the Atlanta Braves roll into Camden Yards tonight.

  • Alex Wood (7-6, 3.78 ERA) takes on Kevin Gausman (1-2, 5.18 ERA) tonight in the series opener in Oriole Park at Camden Yards.  Wood won his last game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 21st.  He’s been mostly positive for the Atlanta Braves this season as a top-end of the rotation starter.  If Woody is able to limit his walks and induce grounders in hitter-friendly Camden Yards, I like Atlanta’s chances to win the road series opener tonight.

Tuesday night looks like a great pitching matchup between Julio Teheran (6-5, 4.49 ERA) and Baltimore’s Ubaldo Jimenez (7-6, 3.81 ERA).  Though both starters have had better seasons in the past, both have definitely shown their ability to anchor great rotations.

While I am expecting a bit of a throwback from both pitchers tomorrow in a good, old-fashioned pitchers’ duel, I could totally see either starter struggle on Tuesday night.  Let’s hope that Julio Teheran doesn’t realize he’s pitching on the road, where he is 1-4, 6.95 ERA in 10 starts for the Atlanta Braves this season.

In Wednesday night’s series finale, the Atlanta Braves will send rookie LHP Manny Banuelos (1-2, 2.49 ERA) against Baltimore’s ace in Chris Tillman (7-7, 4.71 ERA).  Banuelos didn’t look particularly sharp in his last start against St. Louis Friday night, allowing 4 ER in 5+ IP.

I’m a little apprehensive about this game as Tillman is usually tough and Banuelos didn’t have a great feel for the strike zone Friday night.  Hopefully Braves Pitching Coach Roger McDowell has a strong bullpen session with the young Manny Banuelos and corrects a few command issues before his next starter Wednesday night.

I envision a close, but high scoring series between these two middle of the pack teams this week.  A sweep doesn’t seem likely so hopefully Nick Markakis and Freddie Freeman can out-slug an always potent Orioles lineup featuring CF Adam Jones and 3B Manny Machado.  I would love to see the Atlanta Braves head into their weekend series 5-4 in their last 9 games against LA, STL, and BAL.  Go Braves!
