Atlanta Braves, Shelby Miller Fall to Marlins 4-1

The Atlanta Braves were unable to once again to provide any run support for their ace Shelby Miller as the team fell to the Miami Marlins in the final game of a 4 game series 4-1.

The Atlanta Braves offense was unable to replicate their performances from the last three games where they scored 9, 6, and 7 runs respectively. The only run the Braves were able to scrape together in Sunday’s contest was a Jonny Gomes home-run in the 7th inning. Nick Markakis‘s 15 game hitting streak also came to an end, as the Atlanta Braves right-fielder went hitless on Sunday.

Shelby Miller‘s winless streak continued on Sunday, as there is seemingly no end to his streak of bad luck. It is criminal how the Atlanta Braves are unable to score any runs when he is on the mound, considering how well he has performed throughout the 2015 season.

The Miami Marlins began the day desperately looking for a win. They took the lead in the second inning of Sunday’s contest, as starting pitcher Brad Hand hit a sacrifice to first base, scoring Cole Gillespie to give the Fish a 1-0 lead. The Marlins extended their lead in the second as second-baseman Dee Gordon singled home Adeiny Hechavarria to make the score 2-0.

The Fish increased their lead in the 6th inning, as Brad Hand recorded his second RBI of the game, grounding into a fielder’s choice which plated J.T. Realmuto. After a 360 homer by Jonny Gomes put the Braves on the board at 3-1, Christian Yellich singled home Ichiro Suzuki in the top of the 9th inning, making the score a decisive 4-1 lead for the Marlins.

Shelby Miller did not have his best stuff today, as he only pitched 5.0 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 4. He struggled with his pitch count, especially in the second inning, which led to his early exit from the game. Still, only giving up two runs is a good outing for any pitcher; but without any form of run support, he took another loss.

It’s disappointing to see Miller not receive any run support or wins during his breakout year as the Atlanta Braves ace. Hopefully John Hart will acquire some bats in the offseason to remediate the issue. It’s frustrating to see but I’m happy that Miller has been taking it in stride and not drawing attention to his team’s offensive deficiencies.

The Atlanta Braves head to St. Petersburg, Florida for a short two-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays that begins on Tuesday at Tropicana Field.
