Mike Scott Faces 25 Years In Prison After Arrest

Atlanta Hawks’ forward Mike Scott was arrested on felony drug charges on July 30th in Banks County, Georgia for possession of marijuana and MDMA.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Chris Vivlamore reports that Mike Scott posted his $8,100 bond on July 31st, and was the passenger in the vehicle that was pulled over. Scott now faces up to 25 years in prison for his actions. Fox 5 reported the circumstances that led to the arrest, stating:

"“The Banks County Sheriff’s Office said Scott was in a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe that fled a traffic stop on Interstate 85 around 9 a.m. Thursday. Deputies said they were attempting to pull the car over for following too close to another vehicle. Speeds reached up to 98 mph before eventually stopping two miles down the road, according to deputies.”"

This report does not bode well for Mike Scott and his future with the Atlanta Hawks. Mike Scott was in the vehicle his brother, Antonn Imhotep Scott, and indicated to the authorities that the illegal substances belonged to him.Vivlamore also reports that law enforcement officials found 35.2 grams of marijuana and 10.9 grams of MDMA the car. On top of the possession of cannabis and MDMA, the vehicular chase that ensued further compounds the issue for Scott.

The Atlanta Hawks have declined to comment on Mike Scott’s arrest and felony charges but are aware of the situation. One has to think that the reason the Hawks have not yet commented on Scott’s arrest is because they are mulling over the correct course of action to take. It is reasonable to assume that Mike Scott’s tenure with the Atlanta Hawks will be coming to an abrupt end in the near future.

Playing Devil’s Advocate, there is always the chance that Mike Scott was covering for his brother, taking responsibility in order prevent his younger sibling’s arrest. Even if that is the case, I still do not see the Atlanta Hawks’ retaining Mike Scott’s services this coming season.

Scott fell out of favor in Head Coach Mike Budenholzer’s rotation at the end of the 2015 season following his return from a back injury. Last season, Mike Scott played in 68 games, averaging 7.8 points and 2.9 rebounds. Once Mike Scott is released by the Atlanta Hawks, the team will face the matter of replacing him either externally or through another internal option.

I will always remember Mike Scott for his insane 18 point second quarter in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference 1st round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers. Sadly though, Scott’s actions are not tenable. There is simply no excuse for evading arrest and possessing that amount of drugs.
