Atlanta Braves Comeback Falls Short Against D-Backs, Lose 8-4

The Atlanta Braves looked to add another W to the win column against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday and almost staged a comeback after being down 6-0, but unfortunately that was not the case as the Braves were roughed up early.

Mike Folynewicz (4-3) got jumped on early by the Diamondbacks. Despite showing some success by striking out Paul Goldschmidt, Mike wasn’t able to get it done against a Diamondbacks squad that has put up the second most runs scored in the National League as they chased him off in the 5th inning.

The game was pretty uninspiring for the Atlanta Braves until the 8th inning, as the tone for the game was rather droll early on, evidenced in the 1st inning by a miscued pop fly wasn’t corralled in by Cameron Maybin. However Maybin did account for one of the Braves few hits and then a score at the end of the game. Mike Folynewicz didn’t any run support as Maybin attained the only hit during Mike’s time on the mound.

One thing of note though, we were able to see Edwin Jackson for the first time in an Atlanta Braves uniform as he came in for relief in the 5th inning, recording his first strikeout as a member of the Braves. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out 4 in 2.1 innings of relief. Edwin’s presence in the bullpen was surely needed, and hopefully some of the success that he found tonight will carry on in the future, as the Braves have him for the rest of the season.

The Atlanta Braves were able to load the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but with two outs they were not able to capitalize with Joey Terdoslavich at the plate. The most action Turner Field saw from the Braves all night came in the 8th inning when they were able to rattle off 4 runs, two of those coming off a Nick Swisher home-run.

Jake Brigham was brought into the game in the top of the 9th inning to hold the D-Backs’ lead at 2, but gave up a 2-run single to Paul Goldschmidt, scoring Ender Inciarte and A.J. Pollock, making the score 8-4. The Atlanta Braves went in order in the bottom of the 9th, unable to capitalize on any offensive momentum gained in the previous inning.

Overall, this wasn’t the Atlanta Braves game to win despite getting things going late in the game. Hopefully tomorrow they will be able to come back strong and wrap up an early game to take the series before heading out to San Diego to face the Padres in what will be a game of current and former players for each team competing against each other.
