The Atlanta Braves bullpen wasted a superb start by Julio Teheran on the road, and their offensive woes continued on Wednesday afternoon as the Bravos were swept by the Friars, losing their tenth consecutive game at Petco Park by a final score of 3-2.

The Atlanta Braves have now lost 17 of their past 19 games on the road. Wednesday also marked the return of Freddie Freeman to the Atlanta Braves lineup. There was hope that Freeman’s presence in the lineup would galvanize the offense into action, but alas the Braves offensive struggles continued. Freeman did record a hit in his first game back from the Disabled List.

Julio Teheran found himself in trouble in the first inning, as the Padres loaded the bases. Teheran pitched out of trouble, inducing a ground-out off the bat of Melvin Upton Jr. to end the inning. Teheran still had a high pitch count in the 1st, throwing 36 pitches to get out of the frame.

The Atlanta Braves drew first blood on Wednesday, as Michael Bourn recorded a one out hit off of Tyson Ross in the top of the 3rd inning, only to be caught stealing by catcher Austin Hedges. Ross then walked both Cameron Maybin and Freddie Freeman with two outs. In the ensuing at bat, Nick Markakis hit an RBI single through the gap into right-field, scoring Maybin and giving the Atlanta Braves a 1-0 lead.

Other than a rocky first inning, Julio Teheran pitched excellently on the road in San Diego on Wednesday, going 6.0 innings and allowing only 1 earned run on 4 hits and 1 BB, while striking out 7. His only blemish came in the bottom of the 6th inning, as Yangervis Solarte hit a solo shot off of Teheran to tie the game at 1-1.

The Friars took the lead in the bottom of the 7th inning, as Austin Hedges doubled to deep center, scoring Melvin Upton Jr. and giving the Friars a 2-1 lead. Yangervis Solarte recorded his second RBI of the game in the same inning, doubling to deep left field off of Atlanta Braves pitcher Matt Marksberry to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Atlanta Braves had promising inning developing in the top of the 8th, as Cameron Maybin led off the inning with a single off of Padres’ reliever Joaquin Benoit. Freddie Freeman then struckout, setting up a faceoff between Benoit and Nick Markakis. Markakis then slashed an opposite field double down the left-field line, scoring Maybin and inching the Braves closer at 3-2. That would be all the Atlanta Braves could muster in the 8th, as Jace Peterson flied out to Melvin Upton Jr. with 2 outs to end the frame.

Craig Kimbrel painfully closed out the game in the top of the 9th, shutting down his former club and giving the Padres the series sweep. The Atlanta Braves will mercifully depart sunny southern California this evening and head east to the Windy City, as they prepare for a 4-game set with the Chicago Cubs starting tomorrow evening. Mike Foltynewicz gets the call for the Bravos as he opposes Cubs’ ace Jake Arrietta. First pitch is set for 8PM.
