Georgia Bulldogs Men’s SEC Basketball Schedule Revealed

The Georgia Bulldogs Men’s Basketball Team’s SEC schedule initial revealing came yesterday afternoon.  With the Dawgs poised to make some noise in the SEC and get back to the Big Dance in March, let’s see what games Georgia needs to circle on the calendar in 2015-16.

In their 18-game conference schedule the Dawgs will play the Missouri Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels twice, in addition to the new three biennial basketball rivalries with the Auburn Tigers, the Florida Gators, and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

UGA will open conference play on January 2nd down in Gainesville when Mark Fox’s Georgia Bulldogs take on the arch rival Florida Gators in their new HC Mike White’s SEC debut.

After a surprising down year for the Gators where UF saw their hoops team finish below .500 and their outstanding HC Billy Donovan leave to coach the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, the Georgia Bulldogs will have the first opportunity to see if Mike White can keep the Gators relevant in an increasingly competitive SEC basketball conference.

  • The first of two with Ole Miss happens January 9th when the Dawgs venture to Oxford to take on the Rebels at their new stadium.  I see Ole Miss as two strong contending teams in the SEC vying for another trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2016.

The Georgia Bulldogs then welcome the Rebels to Stegeman Coliseum on February 27th.  Georgia has to at least split with Ole Miss this year to feel confident about a return trip to the Tournament.

Mark Fox will get his first look at three of the four new SEC coaches just once this year. On January 13th, the Tennessee Volunteers led by new HC Rick Barnes (formerly of Texas) come to Athens it was is almost always an exciting game between the Dawgs and Vols.

The Georgia Bulldogs play the other Bulldogs in Starkville this winter when Mark Fox and the boys take on Ben Howland (formerly with UCLA and Pittsburgh) trying to revitalize a strong Mississippi State Men’s Program.  I don’t know if JJ Frazier will again put up 37 points at the Hump this year when the Dawgs play on February 13th, but wouldn’t that be something if he did?

-= Can Mark Fox Get The Dawgs Back in the Tournament? =-

On the final game of the regular season the Georgia Bulldogs will play the Alabama Crimson Tide now led by HC Avery Johnson (formerly with the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks) in what could stand as a very exciting game.  Mark Fox was able to stick in Athens while Anthony Grant was not in Tuscaloosa.  I expect Johnson to get the Tide rolling again here shortly.

As for other intriguing games on the Dawgs’ plate, Georgia is very fortunate to get the Arkansas Razorbacks at home (January 23rd) but have to play both the Kentucky Wildcats (February 9th) and the LSU Tigers (January 26th) on the road.  Getting an improved Vanderbilt team on the road on February 20th isn’t easy either.

All in all, Georgia has an exciting basketball season ahead of it with 9 games featured on the SEC Network and 6 on ESPN.  The Georgia Bulldogs also have some great games in the non-conference this year including Baylor, Seton Hall, Kansas State, and of course the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.  Mark Fox, you have to beat the Jackets this year!  It’s been five years!

In my opinion, I see the Dawgs being able to win at least 10 games again in SEC play.  With another strong showing in non-conference and either a 12 or 14-win SEC season, I could see the Dawgs again winning 20 or more games this year and get back into the NCAA Tournament.  Let’s just hope that the Georgia Bulldogs don’t face a grossly under-seed team like Michigan State in the first round that ends up making the Final Four.
