There was hope that Friday’s contest might reverse a recent trend of offensive incompentence on the part of the Atlanta Braves, as Freddie Freeman staked Shelby Miller to an early lead by grounding into a fielder’s choice, scoring leadoff hitter Nick Markakis and giving the Braves a 1-0 lead.

The Braves’ would not score again.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Shelby Miller got into trouble, allowing Cubs’ catcher Miguel Montero to score off of a fielders choice, making the score 3-2. The score wouldn’t remain square for long, as Miguel Montero doubled to right-field, bringing home Bryant to give the Cubs a 4-3 lead. The Cubs would again score in the bottom of the 7th, as Anthony Rizzo would drive home rookie Addison Russell, making the score a decisive 5-3 victory for Joe Maddon‘s club.
