Georgia Bulldogs: Still No Answers at Starting QB

The Georgia Bulldogs still have not named a starting quarterback less than two weeks from the 2015 Season Opener against the ULM Warhawks at Sanford Stadium on September 5th.

Many thought that some clarity would emerge after the Dawgs’ second scrimmage of fall camp today.  However Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Richt was reluctant to cut the three-man QB race between Faton Bauta, Greyson Lambert, and Brice Ramsey down to two.

  • Richt did have fun with the media saying that freshman QB Nick Robinson would now be taking third teams reps, despite going 4-4 in the scrimmage.  As I’ve said before, Mark Richt holds all the cards in this ever popular QB battle for the Georgia Bulldogs.  Neither Richt or Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will divulge their trade secrets until they absolutely have to (Week 3 vs. the South Carolina Gamecocks on September 18th).

It did seem that Mark Richt honestly wanted to have some idea of who the starter would be after today, but it’s still too close tell.  I wanted to believe that somebody has taken a step forward between Bauta, Lambert and Ramsey but it just hasn’t happened yet.  The longer this goes on, the more uncertain I am of who will come out victorious.

I have to believe that Schottenheimer likes Ramsey’s ability to stretch the field with his arm.  Richt often speaks of Bauta’s work ethic and leadership qualities.  It seems like Greyson Lambert already has a strong grasp of the Georgia Bulldogs offensive playbook despite just graduating from the University of Virginia this summer before transferring.  Richt and Schottenheimer will have to consider Lambert’s previous starting experience while at UVA as well in determining who will lead the Dawgs this fall.

Personally, I’ve been back and forth between Brice Ramsey and Faton Bauta all summer and now with Lambert heavily factoring into the mix, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if any of the three emerge as the starting quarterback in the coming weeks.

My bet is that Richt and Schottenheimer will not name a starter before the season begins with all three getting a fair shot in Week 1 against ULM.  However, I sense that Brice Ramsey does get the first snap under center in two Saturdays.  If it’s not Ramsey leading the Georgia Bulldogs in the first series against the Warhawks, then I would feel strongly that either Faton Bauta or Greyson Lambert will win the starting gig.
