Rex Grossman: Veteran QB to Workout for Falcons

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s D. Orlando Ledbetter and ESPN.com’s Vaughn McClure, veteran Quarterback and former acolyte of Kyle Shanahan Rex Grossman will workout for the Atlanta Falcons, per a report.

The Atlanta Falcons have yet to confirm the report. Last week, Rex Grossman turned down an offer from the New York Jets, indicating that a reunion with Kyle Shanahan may occur, given the current state of the Falcons’ race for the backup quarterback spot on the roster. It is well documented that both Shanahan and Grossman had a close relationship while together in Washington. Grossman played for the Cleveland Browns in 2014, backing up Brian Hoyer.

Thus far during camp and the preseason, T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree have both been vying to backup Matt Ryan during the 2015 season. Yates, a Pope High School grad, was the Falcons’ backup quarterback last season after coming over from the Houston Texans. Renfree, a former 7th round pick by the Falcons in 2013 out of Duke, has exceeded expectations and is looking to supplant Yates behind Ryan.

  • During Friday night’s preseason game against the New York Jets, both T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree struggled, possibly leading to the decision on the part of the Falcons to bring Rex Grossman in for a workout to shore up the backup QB position. Rex Grossman played on the Redskins when Kyle Shanahan was the Offensive Coordinator in DC.

Rex Grossman, if brought on, could benefit from being reunited with Shanahan. Grossman has a superb understanding of the offense that is in place, and in the event that Matt Ryan is injured, has big game experience under his belt — both at the college and professional level.

Though T.J. Yates is also a proven NFL quarterback, I think it is prudent of the Atlanta Falcons to workout Rex Grossman. A former starter at the University of Florida and with both the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins, Grossman’s experience makes him an intriguing piece to add for the team.

I personally would feel more confident with Rex Grossman backing up Matt Ryan; though I pray to the Football gods that nothing happens to our franchise quarterback this coming season. Because of Grossman’s knowledge of Shanahan’s offensive scheme and his experience, there would not be as significant a drop off in performance should Ryan succumb to an injury at any point.

Even if Rex Grossman actually works out with the Atlanta Falcons, there is no guarantee that he will make the final roster. If he does, he provides veteran experience and depth at the quarterback position, despite what fans may think of him.
