Georgia Bulldogs: Which WR Steps Up After JSW Injury?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Georgia Bulldogs may lose WR Justin Scott-Wesley to medical retirement after JSW suffered his third knee injury in the last two seasons.

Scott-Wesley supposedly told his high school coach that he is probably done with playing football after this most recent setback.  Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Richt said that Justin may not return to the field, “if at all” in a recent press conference.  Only Senior RT Kolton Houston feels that the Dawgs have not seen the last of JSW.

It’s a shame to see a talent like Justin Scott-Wesley not stay healthy and completely derail a promising career as a deep ball threat for the Georgia Bulldogs.  Should JSW decide to medically retire, who in the UGA WR corps steps up so that his lost isn’t felt so badly?

  • The Georgia Bulldogs are hoping to get a healthy RS Senior season from WR Malcolm Mitchell, who the SEC Coaches picked on their All-SEC 2nd Team yesterday along with Auburn’s Duke Williams.  Mitchell is an explosive playmaker for the Dawgs but like JSW, he’s rarely healthy.  So who could Mark Richt and newly promoted WRs Coach Bryan McClendon rely on if Mitchell can’t live up to his 2015 expectations?

I see three players at receiver that could help make plays for the Dawgs in Scott-Wesley’s absence if Malcolm Mitchell can’t carry the weight of the world on his shoulders: Isaiah McKenzie, Shakenneth Williams, and true freshman Terry Godwin.

McKenzie like Mitchell made the 2nd Team All-SEC squad, albeit as a return specialist.  I-Mac has great playmaking ability both in the offense and especially on special teams.  McKenzie should thrive in new OC Brian Schottenheimer’s system as Schotty likes to have his wideouts use their inherent quickness to make plays.  Expect McKenzie to at least factor into the short-to-medium passing game for the Dawgs in 2015.

Williams came on towards the end of last season.  Many thought that Richt would redshirt Shakenneth but his talent was too obvious for that redshirt to hold up.  I see Williams making more of an impact as a sophomore in Schottenheimer’s system.  With both Michael Bennett and Chris Conley playing in the AFC and with the likely retirement of Justin Scott-Wesley, there are plenty of catches available for a young and talent receiver like Shakenneth Williams in 2015 with the Georgia Bulldogs.

However, I think that the player that benefits the most from JSW’s likely medical retirement is true freshman wideout Terry Godwin.  The 5-Star ATH from Hogansville, GA will certainly contribute in Schottenheimer’s offense right away.  The two-sport Dawg, Godwin will play baseball too in the spring for Georgia, will only get better with more reps and in-game experience as a true freshman.  While I don’t expect him to have an A.J. Green caliber freshman year for the Georgia Bulldogs, wouldn’t that be a very pleasant surprise?

Only 10 more days until it’s finally time to tee it up Between the Hedges.  The ULM Warhawks come to the Classic City for some gridiron action with your Georgia Bulldogs on September 5th.  Until next time, forever, Go Dawgs!
