Mark Richt Addresses Starting QB Decision

Mark Richt met with the media following yesterday’s practice to address his decision to name UVA transfer Greyson Lambert the starting quarterback of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Head Coach Mark Richt shed light on his difficult decision to pick a starter out of three capable scholarship quarterbacks: Junior Faton Bauta, RS Sophomore Brice Ramsey, and newly named starter Greyson Lambert.

Mark Richt believes that “if we’d played anyone of those guys or started anyone of those guys, everybody would have had a great comfort level.  I think if we’d had just kept on rolling them, one guy the first series, one guy the next series, one guy the next series, I think they’d have been fine with that too.”

  • This is because all three quarterbacks got so many reps with the first team.  So Mark Richt, OC Brian Schottenheimer, and the rest of the Georgia Bulldogs team are fortunate to have three quarterbacks that can start should injuries become an issue during the season.

Richt’s decision to name a starter on Monday evening was to have the media frenzy over the highly discussed UGA QB race fizzle out before Saturday afternoon’s game against the ULM Warhawks.  It is usually in the best interest of the team to name a starting quarterback the Monday before the game, so that the team and the newly promoted passer can best prepare for their game on Saturday.  Mark Richt wanted “the zoo to be over [Tuesday]”.

Mark Richt believes that he is at peace with his decision heading into Saturday’s game.  Apparently, Greyson Lambert did separate himself from Bauta and Ramsey, but not by much.  The small margin of separation is what made this starting quarterback decision so incredibly difficult.

Richt shed light on possibly bringing either Ramsey or Bauta into the first part of games ‘by design’.  He means that if Brice Ramsey or Faton Bauta were to play in a series in the early part of the next few games, that it would not indicate that Greyson Lambert has lost the starting role.

This isn’t surprising since Mark Richt did use Faton Bauta and Brice Ramsey to some extent last season on certain drives.  Dawg Nation knew that Hutson Mason was still the UGA starting quarterback.  Mark Richt is a very patient man who doesn’t make impulsive decisions, especially at quarterback.  He played quarterback at Miami (FL) as the primary backup to Jim Kelly in the early 1980’s.

Richt did add that certain matchups on the defense may factor into who plays in some series.  If an opponent has a strong pass rush, savvy tackling in the middle of the field, or shutdown players in the secondary, expect HC Mark Richt to make the right call with the man under center.  Entering Week 1, Mark Richt has made a firm decision to go with Greyson Lambert as the starter.
