Georgia Bulldogs: Richt, Pruitt Preview ULM Game

facebooktwitterreddit

Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Richt and Defensive Coordinator Jeremy Pruitt met with the media after yesterday’s practice to preview the Georgia Bulldogs’ home opener Saturday versus the ULM Warhawks.

Neither of the Georgia Bulldogs coaches divulged all that much about their game plans against ULM (why would they?), but Richt and Pruitt aren’t taking the Warhawks lightly.  Louisiana-Monroe has upset two SEC teams in the last decade, 2007 over Alabama in Nick Saban’s first year with the program, and again in 2012 over Arkansas when the Hogs were #8 in the nation.  Pruitt was part of that 2007 Alabama staff stating, “I’ve coached against Louisiana-Monroe one time, and 0-1.”

Even with high regard for the ULM Warhawks, expect the Georgia Bulldogs to play reserve players in the home opener against their Sun Belt Conference foe.  Mark Richt said that he plans on using 6-8 wide receivers on Saturday, including true freshman Terry Godwin.

  • Jeremy Pruitt has liked how Rico McGraw has competed at the STAR position and might see some snaps there.  He later added that true freshman defensive backs might play on Saturday as well.

Reading between the lines, does that mean the Mississippi duo of Johnathan Abram and Jarvis Wilson get into the game?  Both high school Mississippians enrolled early to have a head start on the nuances of Pruitt’s secondary.  Remember that true freshman Dominick Sanders became a star in Pruitt’s scheme after signing with the Georgia Bulldogs late in the process.  Will arriving on campus early help either Abram or Wilson?  We’ll see.

Richt mentioned that Greyson Lambert‘s height (6’5”) could play out as an advantage for the newly named starting quarterback.  While his stature might hurt his mobility, it should help Greyson see a little more than a 6’0” passer would and deliver a few more accurate balls to his receivers.

Pruitt said that All-SEC 3rd Team OLB Leonard Floyd “will play all over” the field for the Georgia Bulldogs this fall.  In an effort to get more OLBs on the field, being that it’s Georgia’s deepest defensive position, Floyd has taken snaps not only at outside linebacker, but also on the inside, at STAR, and even some at defensive end.

Floyd’s versatility makes him such a valued commodity on the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs defense.  He’s apparently not just a situational pass rusher any more and that considerably benefits the Dawgs.

It seems that all parties are very much excited to go against somebody else on Saturday.  With a bevy of running backs, a seasoned offensive line, the deepest OLB group in the country, and a newly named starting quarterback, it’s time for the Georgia Bulldogs to tee it up Between the Hedges.  Only two days stand in our way from another hopefully great season for our Georgia Bulldogs.  Go Dawgs!
