Atlanta Braves Head to Philly for Battle of Worst Records in Baseball

Well, Atlanta Braves fans, here it is: the Battle Royale of futility on the baseball diamond.

The Atlanta Braves head to Philadelphia on Monday to face the MLB worst Phillies, who now stand only a game behind the Braves for the worst record in baseball. The Phillies have a record of 53-84 while the Atlanta Braves after losing 12 straight and 19 out of their last 20 games stand at 54-83.

At the beginning of the season, I knew the Atlanta Braves would not be good, but I believed they would be at least competitive until the end of the season. That is no longer the case, as the debate of whether the Braves are the worst team in baseball is now a certainty. All that remains is for the Phillies to overtake them in the standings to make it official.

I’ll dispense with the pessimism in order to preview this 3-game set between the Atlanta Braves and the Fightin’ Phils:

    Monday:

Williams Perez (4-6, 5.65 ERA) vs. Aaron Harang (5-14, 4.59 ERA)

Williams Perez has struggled immensely since his return from the Disabled List in late July. After Mike Foltynewicz was placed on the DL, Perez was promptly recalled following a demotion. He has allowed at least 1 home-run in each of his last 5 starts.

Former Atlanta Braves’ pitcher Aaron Harang has had a disappointing year in Philadelphia. Harang allowed four runs in 4.2 innings in his last start. Harang has a 7.71 ERA in his past 13 starts.

    Tuesday:

Matt Wisler (5-6, 5.94) vs. Aaron Nola (5-2, 4.02 ERA)

Matt Wisler is slated to start on Tuesday, but following his two innings of shutout relief on Sunday, it is highly unlikely he will toe the rubber for the Atlanta Braves. In his last start, Wisler lasted 1.0 inning while allowing 7 earned runs against the Nationals.

Aaron Nola has found some success this year in the Phillies, but in his last start he allowed 6 runs to the New York Mets in 4.0 innings pitched.

    Wednesday:

Julio Teheran (9-7, 4.51 ERA) vs. TBD

Julio Teheran had his best road start of the year for the Atlanta Braves this past Friday in Washington, going 6.0 innings while only allowing 1 earned run. His fastball was electric and his emotion was trying to will the Atlanta Braves to victory. It will be interesting to see if he can sustain his recent success in Philadelphia.

This season has been a struggle for the Atlanta Braves, but perhaps they can go into Philadelphia and at the very least end this losing streak. Go Braves!
