The Atlanta Braves almost blew the ballgame, but in the end an A.J. Pierzynski ripped a single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning against Phillies’ reliever Luis Garcia to give the Braves a 2-1 victory.

The Atlanta Braves recorded their first sweep since June against the New York Mets, and their first three-game winning streak since early August.

Julio Teheran‘s excellent month of September continued on Sunday, as the Braves starter nearly pitched a complete game, going 8.1 innings while allowing only 1 earned run on 5 hits. After struggling for much of the season, Teheran has resurrected his dominance late in the year. Unfortunately, Teheran left the game in the top of 9th inning and received a no-decision on Sunday.

During the month of September, Teheran has 1.93 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched. Teheran pitching well be critical for the Braves going into next season, as Teheran and Shelby Miller will form the top of the Atlanta Braves’ starting rotation. After a simple fix from Roger McDowell a month ago to switch the side of the rubber he was pitching on, Teheran has regained his dominant form.

Rookie Aaron Nola also pitched impressively on Sunday for the Philadelphia Phillies, going 7.0 innings for Philadelphia while only allowing 1 run on 5 hits. Nola has looked good since his promotion to the majors, and figures to be a major part of the Phillies rebuilding process going forward.

The Atlanta Braves drew first blood on Sunday, as Saturday’s hero Freddie Freeman hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Michael Bourn to give the Bravos an early 1-0 lead. That was all Julio Teheran needed for most of the game. After Fredi Gonzalez pulled Teheran in the 9th inning in favor of Peter Moylan, Moylan allowed an RBI single to SS Andres Blanco, scoring Aaron Altherr to know the game at 1 apiece going into the bottom of the frame. Then in the bottom of the 9th, A.J. Pierzynski saved the game for the Atlanta Braves, singling home Andrelton Simmons to secure the victory for Atlanta.

The Atlanta Braves won’t have long to celebrate their rare series sweep, as they head to Queens tomorrow to take on the division leading New York Mets. Shelby Miller will oppose Jonathan Niese, as Miller will attempt to win his first game since May 17th and snap his 22 game winless streak. This was a great series late in the year for the Atlanta Braves, and I can’t help feel ecstatic about the results — even if it was against the Phillies. Go Braves!
