Tevin Coleman: Falcons’ RB to Miss a Couple of Weeks with Fractured Rib

The Atlanta Falcons’ rookie running back Tevin Coleman was injured on Sunday against the New York Giants at Metlife Stadium on a play in which Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie tackled Coleman, fracturing a rib.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is now reporting that Tevin Coleman will miss a couple of weeks due to the severity of the injury.

Head Coach Dan Quinn also stated at today’s press conference that Tevin Coleman would not participate in team practices until Thursday, and his status would be re-assessed on Friday. Coleman rushed for 32 yards on 9 carries and recorded the first touchdown of his career.

In his absence, Devonta Freeman will get the bulk of the carries for the Atlanta Falcons. Freeman finished Sunday’s game with 25 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown to go with 34 receiving yards.

Dan Quinn also mentioned that the Atlanta Falcons would not pursue any other free agency options at the running back position, quelling speculation that the team may pursue someone like Montee Ball in the near future.

Freeman seems up to the task of being the Falcons’ primary option on the ground for at least the next couple of weeks in Tevin Coleman’s absence. He was, after all, the projected starting back going into training camp before missing time with a hamstring injury. Freeman’s ability to catch the ball gives the Falcons versatility at the position.

Look for rookie Terron Ward to also get some more playing time with Tevin Coleman out. Ward went undrafted out of Oregon State, and made the team out of Training Camp. The Atlanta Falcons will get a much better look at what Ward has to offer, especially next week in Dallas.

In other injury news, Paul Worrilow is day-to-day after bruising his calf against the Giants on Sunday. He should be ready to play this coming Sunday against the Cowboys.

Though Tevin Coleman was playing very well before this injury, the Atlanta Falcons have the depth at running back to defray the loss of Coleman’s production for at least the next few weeks. This also gives Devonta Freeman an opportunity to show that he can be an every down back, and maybe make the Falcons question their depth chart once Tevin Coleman is ready to play again. Only time will tell in what direction Head Coach Dan Quinn and the Falcons decide to go. Keep it here for ongoing Falcons updates.
