Mark Richt Meets Eason in Washington for Breakfast

Mark Richt had himself an awesome weekend. Not only did his Dawgs beat Auburn, but he flew to Washington to have breakfast with No. 1 QB commit Jacob Eason.

Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs beat the Auburn Tigers down on The Plains yesterday, 20-13 to move to 7-3 (5-3) on the year. With Georgia not playing for anything other than maybe a 10 win season in 2015, Mark Richt wasted no time in making his weekend all the more awesome. Less than 24 hours after beating Auburn, Coach Richt flew to Washington to have breakfast with highly touted UGA QB Commit Jacob Eason.

For a normally conservative head coach, Mark Richt made a bold move in flying out to Lake Stevens, Washington to visit his prized quarterback commit of the 2016 Class. The reason Richt was able to fly out to the Pacific Northwest to visit Eason without fear of an NCAA violation is that Jacob has already filled out his financial aid agreement with University of Georgia. Eason plans to enroll at UGA this January to take part in spring practice for the Georgia Bulldogs.

After the 27-3 loss to Florida on Halloween, Mark Richt’s seat was starting to get mighty hot. Even the most unwavering Mark Richt loyalists were starting to question if their head coach needed to go. However, Richt finished out SEC play with consecutive wins over Kentucky and Auburn to secure another over .500 year for the UGA program.

Richt opting to fly across the country is a “I’m not going anywhere” type of gesture to the most praised prep school passer since that rocket arm that came out of Highland Park, Texas in 2006. I’m referring to UGA gunslinger and starting quarterback for the Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford.

Eason has that type of hype as a high school senior. Though he and his father, former Notre Dame wideout Tony Eason, have said that they are firm on Jacob’s commitment to the University of Georgia, many speculated that should Mark Richt no longer be the head coach that Eason may open up his recruitment once again. There was some dialogue between Eason and a few other schools a few weeks back, including with Florida OC Doug Nussmeier and Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh.

Those “talks” seem like they were overblown, merely just Tweet confirmations like, “Okay, Coach.” Mr. Eason said that unless a hypothetical Mark Richt replacement were to run either the Wing T or the Triple Option that his son Jacob would play his college ball in the Red and Black for the University of Georgia.

Not that Mark Richt had to put out the fire by visiting Eason on a Sunday after a rivalry game to ensure his own job security, the two wins over Kentucky and Auburn did that for him, but you have to believe that the surprise visit only helped cement Eason’ commitment to Georgia. What other coach would fly across the country to spend time with you mid-season, let alone right after rivalry game on the road?

Eason will make his official visit to Athens this upcoming when the Dawgs take on the Georgia Southern Eagles. Supposedly this weekend will gain a few more commitments as both Eason and 4-Star OT Commit Ben Cleveland will be in Athens together, as the two main recruiters of their UGA Class of 2016. The GATA game will have a 7:00 PM ET kickoff on Saturday Between the Hedges. I can guarantee that Richt will have breakfast with Eason again within the week. Go Dawgs!
