Kevin Sherrer: 3 great options for UGA OLB coach

facebooktwitterreddit

Kevin Sherrer will serve as the Georgia Bulldogs’ interim defensive coordinator for the bowl game, but he has at least 3 great coaching options for 2016.

One of the more positive things to come from the dismissal of Mark Richt is that it has elevated the value of some of his former staff members. Perhaps the coach that has benefitted the most from this coaching change in Athens is outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer.

Sherrer will coach the Dawgs in the TaxSlayer Bowl as the interim defensive coordinator. However, it may end up being trial run for a few programs to see if he can do it full-time next season. From the looks of it, Kevin Sherrer has at least three great situations he can go to next year: Sherrer could stay in Athens or go to either Coral Gables or Tuscaloosa.

Should Kevin Sherrer stay at Georgia, he could hold on to his current gig as the outside linebackers coach or he could end up getting promoted to defensive coordinator under new Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. Sherrer has been at Georgia since 2014, coming to Athens from Mobile to become Jeremy Pruitt’s outside linebackers coach after being the South Alabama Jaguars’ defensive coordinator the year before.

Sherrer could end up following Pruitt back to Tuscaloosa to serve in the same position under Pruitt in 2016. Both Pruitt and Sherrer’s alma mater is the University of Alabama and have already worked together at several places (Hoover High School, Alabama, Georgia).

Kevin Sherrer could also potentially follow Mark Richt to Coral Gables and serve on his staff as either the outside linebackers coach or as the defensive coordinator. As of now, Richt has yet to name someone to his defensive staff.

All of these options could already be on the table for Kevin Sherrer, but he wants to do the right thing and help the Dawgs get ready for their bowl game down in Jacksonville against Penn State on January 2nd. He’d be able to get an outside linebackers coaching position or something of that caliber at all three schools.

At Georgia and at Miami, Sherrer could potentially become either school’s next defensive coordinator. That would stand as a big step up for him and his family. While he could follow Pruitt back to Alabama, I think Sherrer is ready to at least entertain the idea of becoming a defensive coordinator in the Power 5 either at UGA or The U. My guess is that he won’t decide until after the bowl game and that will decide how all three schools hire accordingly. As of now, all three seem very much in play for Coach Kevin Sherrer.
