The Atlanta Braves outfielder Hector Olivera has been suspended for 82 games for violating the MLB’s off-the-field personal conduct policy with domestic violence charges. How does this incident impact the Braves?

As if this season hasn’t been tough enough on the Atlanta Braves, matters were made worse when it was announced on Thursday that Hector Olivera would be suspended for 82 games.

Olivera, the 31-year-old outfielder, will undergo a suspension without pay due to his arrest on domestic violence charges. On April 13, Olivera was arrested outside of a Washington, D.C., hotel and charged for the assault of a woman. Supposedly Olivera and the woman were acquaintances.

"The suspension, announced by commissioner Rob Manfred, is without pay and covers 82 games, retroactive to April 30. Olivera will not appeal the suspension, the Major League Baseball Players Association said in a statement Thursday."

What does Olivera’s suspension mean for the Braves?

Obviously, for the next 82 games, it means that the Atlanta Braves will be out a left fielder. He won’t be eligible to play again until August 1. However, Olivera will still be allowed to participate in spring training activities throughout his suspension.

The Braves acquired Olivera on July 30, 2015 through a three-team trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins. His contract with the Braves runs through 2020.

The Atlanta Braves still owe Olivera more than $28 million through the $47 million deal he had signed with the Los Angeles Dogers. The Dogers have agreed to pay the deficit as part of the trade agreement.

To put it lightly, it all means that the Atlanta Braves got the short end of the deal. April 13 was a convenient time for Olivera to get arrested, considering the fact that the season just began the first week of April.
