Atlanta Braves send Weber to minors, recall Alvarez

The Atlanta Braves have optioned right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber to Triple-A Gwinnett and recalled left-hander Dario Alvarez. What does this mean for the Braves?

Two weeks ago, the Atlanta Braves claimed New York Mets’ left-hander, Dario Alvarez, off waivers after being designated for assignment.

In the ATL All Day article, “Atlanta Braves: Dario Alvarez claimed off waivers,” the question of what Alvarez could potentially bring the Braves was posed. It didn’t take long for the Atlanta Braves to make use of Alvarez with the decision to send Weber to the minors.

As previously mentioned, he held a 2.45 ERA and 1.00 WHIP last season. Though his 2016 stats were less impressive, Alvarez didn’t spend very long at Gwinnett before being recalled.

"The Braves claimed Alvarez on waivers from the New York Mets on May 25. Alvarez, who will join Atlanta’s bullpen, posed a 1.12 ERA in eight innings at Gwinnett.Weber allowed two runs on three hits in one inning, failing to hold a 7-6 lead, in the Braves’ 9-8 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. He had a 9.28 ERA in five games with Atlanta this season."

Alvarez was clearly putting in necessary effort in his short time with the Gwinnett Braves. That 1.12 ERA in eight innings is a huge improvement for Alvarez compared to his early 2016 stats, which included a 9.98 ERA and 2.09 WHIP in 17 appearances.

What can Atlanta Braves fans take away from this swap? Anyone is fair game under Braves interim manager Brian Snitker.

"Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said, “The reports have been good, so we’ll see. It’s kind of like I told him and used to tell the guys in Gwinnett — everybody’s in play. We’ll find out if he can come out here and give us some innings. I’ve heard he has a good sinker, and it looks like he’s getting it over (for strikes in Triple-A)…. We’ll have work for him.”"
