It’s Dan Uggla Activation Day!

Today marks the probable return of the Braves regular second baseman, Dan Uggla, from the disabled list. He played his second of two rehab games last night, and went 2-4 with a home run, a single, and 2 strikeouts.  In his two rehab games, he went 2-for-7 with 4 K’s.

Uggla is eligible to come off of the DL today, and Fredi Gonzalez said that he will give Dan the option of playing another rehab game in Gwinnett, but he expects that Uggla will be ready to get back to Atlanta.

Dan is recovering from LASIK eye surgery and says he is 100% ready to get back to Atlanta. I don’t really know what to expect from a post-surgery Dan Uggla, but I’m not sure that there will be a whole lot of difference in his performance.  He hit home runs and struck-out before his eye surgery, he will most likely hit home runs and strike-out after it. He will still walk a ton also. Even missing a few weeks of at-bats while on the DL, Uggla is still second on the Braves in home runs (21) and walks (62) and, of course, leads the team in K’s (146).  Hopefully, it will let him recognize pitches better and not get fooled so often, turning some of those strike-outs into hits or walks.

Elliot Johnson has performed well in Uggla’s absence, but it will be nice to get Dan’s power bat back in the lineup.

I would think outfielder Todd Cunningham will be sent back down to Gwinnett to make room on the roster.  The team has quite a few outfielders on the roster, and really don’t have a need for him right now. He will be back in a few days when rosters expand.
