Greetings! We have finally arrived at the start of the regular season! The Hawks are in Dallas to take on the Mavericks, who not-so-coincidentally were their final preseason opponent, and the injury bug has left the team for the most part. As a result, the “starting five” (as we know it) is expected to be in tact here, with Al Horford, Paul Millsap, DeMarre Carroll, Kyle Korver, and Jeff Teague tipping things off.
New head coach Mike Budenholzer picked his spots during preseason, but we did get full, long looks at the starters, and there shouldn’t be any insane surprises tonight. Dallas is a team that is still very much powered by Dirk Nowitzki, and containing him is the key on the defensive end. In addition, the Mavs have an offensive-minded backcourt (to say nothing of their defense) in Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon, and they could present issues for the still-developing Hawks defense.
Offensively, I’ll be interested to see if the Hawks can get Millsap and/or Horford involved early against what is a porous frontcourt for Dallas, and that burden likely falls on Jeff Teague. The rotation, and how it shakes out in a “real” game, will be an additional focal point, as there isn’t a defined 9-man group to this point, especially with Williams and Ayon on the shelf.
Stay tuned throughout the night for updates, and enjoy the start of the season!
